Students navigate effects of senioritis as school year ends

By Lydia Chapman Contributor Brandon Mancio, a graphic design major, is navigating what he thought was a post-spring break slump, but has decided it’s likely the phenomenon known as “senioritis. “I think having senioritis in college is stressful because you are trying to figure out what you will do after college. You are about to go out into the real world, so I think there is more guilt and more pressure because you have to figure out how to be an adult,” said Mancio. According to Trevecca counselor Crayton Croan, senioritis manifests itself differently in every person, but it is a type of burnout due to prolonged stress. College seniors are trying to figure out what they want to do with their life and must navigate applying for jobs, looking for apartments, and finishing up t...

Men’s and women’s basketball overviews

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Photo by Alayna Simons, Editor-in-Chief Men’s basketball Men’s Basketball has had a great turnaround season and is heading into tournament season with a strong record of 15-10. Men’s Basketball head coach Kevin Carroll is pleased with the team's success.  "It’s very gratifying. I don’t go into seasons predicting records and things of that nature. I’m more of a take-it day-by-day kind of guy, and I’m really grateful for the way our guys have come together. We’ve had a really good record at home and that’s been a big part of our overall success," said Carroll.  The men's team has four players averaging double figures in scoring, and according to Carroll, this is their preferred style of offense.  "That's really just our style of play. I ...

International students battle economic pressures

By Kamryn Sanderfer Contributor Photo by Jason Leung on Unsplash Global economic pressures are reaching onto Trevecca’s campus, and being felt by many international students who are struggling to find jobs and keep up with conversion rates.  “One dollar [in America] is 24.5 lempiras [in Honduras] …With that you can actually have a meal, so definitely for our parents to have us here in college, they need to work three times harder,” said Claudia Nuñez, a Honduran senior and president of the International Student Council. “We don’t like to do the conversions because we get scared to see the amount of money that gets invested in our education.” The Centre for the New Economy and Society reported on the World Economic Forum in 2022 that the US dollar had risen in strength b...

(Photo courtesy of Irina Yeakley “The officer was staring into my soul as if she were trying to see if I was a spy or knew the Russian language, so I tried not to freak out and acted as casual and normal as possible," said Irina “She (the officer) was not happy, but she let me through.” Irina let out a sigh of relief as her van, one of the six carrying humanitarian aid, passed over safely into war-stricken Lviv, Ukraine.  The Russian-born but American-raised 21-year-old Trevecca student was in Europe during the Russo-Ukrainian war af...

Spiritual Deepening Week on campus

Photo by Alayna Simons, Editor-in-Chief By Antonia Lopez Staff Writer Trevecca welcomed Olivia Metcalf as the guest speaker for Spiritual Deepening Week. “It’s always fun to be on one of our college campuses. There’s a lot of life and energy,” said Metcalf. “I know that entering into [chapel] is such an honor and privilege because the Holy Spirit does really powerful things when we’re engaged and gathered.” Spiritual Deepening Week occurs every third week of each semester. It is an opportunity for students to slow down and remember that going to college is more than attending class and doing extracurriculars, said Erik Gernand, university chaplain. The theme for the six sessions throughout the week was based on the word “peripateō,” the Greek word for “to walk’’. It came...

Men’s and Women’s track teams kick off season by setting records

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Men’s and women’s track & field had a strong start to the season at the Ramapo College Season Opener in New York City. Three records were broken at the opener in the 60m dash timed at 6.93 by freshman Zion Griffin, men’s long jump with a leap of 6.30m by freshman Dayton Floyd, and 400m dash with a school record of 50:19 by junior Lucas Baggott. Austin Selby, head coach, is encouraged by this performance. “Feeling really good. It was great to have the early in-town rust buster at Vanderbilt. It led to us having overall one of our best meets we have ever had up in NYC,” said Selby. The men’s team has had a strong start this year, and Selby thinks it could be a sign of a successful year. “I think this will be the first year where we truly...

Transfer basketball player leads team

By Trevor West Contributor Photo by Alayna Simons, Editor-in-Chief After three years of feeling frustrated with his playing time on the men’s basketball team at Lee University, Jalen Page took a big risk for his last two years. Page, a junior guard, transferred to Trevecca in August and is averaging 20.3 points a game for the Trojans in his first season on the roster. “I needed a better opportunity to play basketball. I know the type of basketball player I am, and I know at the school I was at wasn’t going to happen. I know where I want to take my career, I want to play this game for a long time. I know that my best years are in front of me, not behind me,” Page said. Coach Kevin Carroll saw something in Page that caught his attention when he became active in the transfer...

James Hambrick, chief security officer-Photos courtesy of Trevecca Marketing By Mia Agee and Ethan Rice Contributors After seeing the need for security personnel assessments and a new security plan of action, Trevecca has hired James Hambrick as the campus's new chief security officer. Hambrick, a former dispatcher and chief of police for Mt. Juliet Police Department (MJPD), became acquainted with Trevecca through a leadership program involving both the university and the police department. Once the university's administration discovered Hambrick was retiring from the MJPD, they set up a meeting with him to talk about the available chief security officer position. Though Greg Dawson, the director of campus security, remains in the same position, he will be working closely w...
