Three new master’s programs are now available at Trevecca.
The three new fully online master programs are Sport and Entertainment Management (SEM), Human Fitness and Performance and Strategic Communication.
Sports and Entertainment Management offers students a business experience as they first take MBA core courses and move forward with the SEM courses. The coursework includes foundations for graduate students, global and economic environment, contemporary issues and ethics and nine more.
Leigh Ann Danzey-Bussell, professor of sports management and the program leader, said there are currently 11 to 12 students in the program, which launched over a year ago. Bussell expects that by spring of 2024, students will double.
Students in the SEM program can focus not only on sports, but on how to build a company or work in the entertainment industry.
The Master’s of Science in Human Performance and Fitness launched this year. The second cohort will begin in May. The 18-month program is fully online.
Aaron Hall, director of the program, said that students also usually want to have a business of their own. As part of the curriculum, students are required to take three MBA level classes: New Venture Creation (BUS 6220), Small Business Management (BUS 6230), and Entrepreneurship and Innovation (BUS 6210).

“Schools and companies are starting to recommend a master’s in human performance and fitness,” he said. “We want this program to kind of check off that box for students that are trying to get a job. When they graduate, they should be certified strength and conditioning coaches.”
The program has different certifications from basic level training to training for athletes and populations that have rigorous exercise goals.
Among the three, the Strategic Communication master’s program has just been added to the curriculum. The program is set to launch in May.
JoEllen Werking-Weedman, program director of the master of science in strategic communication, has designed the program to cover multiple skills that communication leaders need. The goal is to teach students how to create content, do media relations, crisis communication and lead communication strategy for organizations.
“Strategic communication encompasses the storytelling and messaging that organizations need to communicate their mission,” Werking-Weedman said.
No prior communication degree is necessary to enroll. The program is fully online, and it can be completed in 15 months by taking one class at a time. Part of the program marketing is to offer prospective students a crisis communication training module for $99.
