Several fall athletes have stand-out seasons this year

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor The fall sports season is wrapping up, and several Trevecca athletes had record years. Alex Hamm (Photo courtesy TNU Sports Information) Alex Hamm, a sophomore golfer, shot one of the three lowest rounds in Trevecca history at a 66.  “When I shot that, I was locked in, so I didn’t even know what I was at, but after that, I felt a huge sense of relief,” said Hamm.  Hamm finds importance in staying mentally focused in between swings to have performances like that.  “I just try to stay in the present. Our coach always tells us to stay in the present and focus on one shot at a time. Sometimes you have to let your mind wander between swings because if you think about what you’re doing too long, you’ll get mentally tired,” said Ha...

Tiktok #emotionalsupportwaterbottle trend on campus

By Sol Ayala Online Editor It was at the Atlanta Botanical Garden gift shop where Maria Pimentel’s boyfriend bought her a water bottle. Since then, the $50, 18.6 ounce water bottle has officially become her “emotional support water bottle.” Maria Pimentel's emotional support water bottle. “It's a beige metal water bottle. All around the water bottle, it has different succulents and like the name of the succulents next to it in really tiny handwriting,” said Pimentel, a senior psychology major. “I love it." Pimentel is part of a growing number of people who refer to their water bottle as “an emotional support water bottle,” a term that can be traced back to TikTok under the hashtag #emotionalsuportwaterbottle with 303.2 million views and counting. The reusable water bottle i...

Stepping onto the soccer field is number 15—Orlando Jerez. “Ladies and gentlemen, an important substitution for the Trevecca Trojans to mention, enter to the field, Orlando Jerez. He is coming from a really bad injury he had, but now he's back on the field,” notes the game announcer. On Oct. 14, against Ohio Dominican University with a 5-2 score on the boar, Jerez was given his first minutes after a life-altering accident, which left everybody questioning if he ever would be able to step on the on a field again. “Throughout the whole...

New home for communication studies department

By Jedidiah Blomberg Staff Writer Video editing labs, the student newspaper office, an auditorium for theater auditions and rehearsals and film equipment are all now housed all under one roof for the department of communication studies. The department packed up offices in Tidwell, labs in Mackey and other learning spaces across campus to move into the Wakefield building over the summer. For communication studies faculty, the most exciting part of the move is the ability to create more community in the department. “We now have a space where students come and hang out before and after class and spaces for collaboration,” said Jeff Wells, chair of the department of communication studies. “There was no reason for them to come and wait for class in the hallways of Tidwell. There ...

Urban Farm breeds soldier flies to make animal feed

By Miriam Rixon Contributor Matthew Burnham, manager of Trevecca’s urban farm, has the same morning routine everyday come rain or shine. He feeds the chickens shredded leafy greens and feeds the pigs big, round tomatoes and other vegetables they approve of. They are meticulous eaters and often turn their snout up to food that does not fit their sophisticated palate. After feeding the animals, Burham moves on to collect the eggs the chickens have dutifully laid out for him, change the water he set out the previous day, and walk over to a big, white plastic bin sitting in the middle of the chicken yard. Photo by Kayden Boyd – Photographer The bin, covered by a wooden pallet, does not look all that interesting from the outside, but like every special thing, it is what is on t...

Students live with ‘silent disabilities’ on campus

By Ellie Willson Contributor As the sun rises over the Nashville skyline, Trevecca’s campus begins to stir. Students begin to wake up for their 8 a.m. classes, and teachers pull onto campus ready to teach. For many, the process of getting out of bed is difficult, but it is a minuscule problem that gets lost in the shuffle of everyday life. For others, however, a war is waged before they step out of their dorm for the day. These warriors look like any other student, but their battles with chronic illness set them apart in a major way. One of these warriors is Olivia Jarrell, a freshman business major and STUNT athlete. Diagnosed with Addison’s disease, an autoimmune disorder, she lacks vital hormones, which cause her to feel heavily fatigued and appear very tan. She discusses how d...

New graphic design curriculum set for fall 2024

By Alayna Simons Editor-in-chief The graphic design major is now moving to the communication department and introducing new courses after years of being connected with the department of STEM. “I think that the students are really going to love the direction we’re going,” said dean of communications, Dr. Lena Hegi Welch. The 36 credit-hour graphic design curriculum will be introduced fall of 2024 and will include classes relating to visual communication, web design, print design, and motion graphics. The draft for the program has gone through eight or nine graphic designers for feedback and editing, and has gone through the process of approval by several communication professors, in order to make the program most fitting for students. “Everyone has been so gracious and coo...

‘The Eras of Trevecca’ Homecoming 2023 Schedule

By Sol Ayala Online News Editor On Saturday Nov. 4, the homecoming parade will be making its comeback after last year’s parade getting cancelled last minute due to weather conditions. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Trevecca homecoming parade. The structure of the parade is striving for each float to represent a time during the 50 years since the parade started. Madison Triplett, sophomore class president,  along with the sophomore class council, oversee all preparations for the parade, and they picked the theme for this year’s parade. Usually there is not an overall theme to go along with the parade, but with this year being a special anniversary, she thought that this year needed a theme.  The theme for the 2023 homecoming parade will be walking us through “the Er...

New Weight Room for Athletes Plans to Open Next Month

By Nathan Mckissick Staff Writer Trevecca athletes will have their own space to workout beginning next month. The facility, located in the TSAC building, will feature 10 weight racks, a turf area and multiple machines. It will be strictly for athletes on campus for team workouts. This facility will cost the school over $100,000 dollars and is being paid for by the school. “We now have 360 athletes in our athletic department, which is roughly 25 percent of our student body.” said Mark Elliot, the university’s athletic director. “This new weight room gives us more opportunity to adequately train these student-athletes.” With Trevecca athletics moving into a new conference in 2024, the facility gives the university a better chance to get athletes from all over the country. ...

May Graduate Promoted to Dining Hall Manager

Photo by Natasha Clark Photographer By Emily Gibson Section Editor Kaylah Richey decided in the eighth grade that she wanted to be a chef and manage a dining service of some sort someday. She had no idea she would be living her dream immediately after her college graduation at her alma mater at the age of 22. Richey, who graduated with a business degree in May, was recently promoted from her previous position as student supervisor of the Apple Dining Hall where she managed student workers to the Dining Hall Manager where she now oversees the work of over 30 dining hall staff. “I knew that I’d probably go to a supervisor job and then eventually get to that manager position, but I didn’t know that it would come so quickly, and I’m just very happy with how everything turned...
