NCAA’s Potential Fifth Year Could Reshape Division II Athletics

Natalia Bowles Senior reporter The NCAA is considering granting Division II athletes an additional year of eligibility, a move that could significantly alter roster management, scholarship distribution, and competitive balance across programs nationwide.  While no final decision has been announced, athletic departments are already preparing for potential shifts that could affect student-athletes as early as next fall. Trevecca Nazarene University officials say the additional year would bring both opportunities and challenges.  Compliance Director Bri Winic explained that the proposed change could provide more flexibility for athletes looking to extend their academic experience beyond a traditional four-year degree. “Anytime you give athletes the potential to con...

By Trevor West Contributor Jikari Johnson. Photo courtesy Trevecca Athletics. While averaging 17 points per game and leading most of the stats for Ferrum College, Jikari Johnson took a chance and transferred to Trevecca for his senior year.  The shooting guard won a starting role with the Trojans and is averaging 19 points and 3 rebounds per game while shooting 53% from the field and 45% from three-point range, despite the difficulties of transferring late in his college career.  Johnson played his junior season for the Ferrum Panthers, where he played and started 27 games and led the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game. He shot 45.9% from the field, 38.5% from the three-point line and 82.9% from the free-throw line. He averaged 5.1 rebounds per game and was ...

Women’s basketball transfer stands out during final season

By Jalen Page Staff Writer Jenissa Varela. Photo courtesy Trevecca Athletics. Trevecca Women's Basketball has seven new team members this year. Among them is senior guard Jenissa Varela, who transferred from Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. Varela, in her final season of eligibility, is eager to make an impact in the Trojan backcourt with her leadership and playmaking ability. Her veteran experience is already proving valuable to the team. "We knew coming in that she would bring leadership and experience. She has been a great scorer, knowing when to pick and choose her spots," said Head Coach Karen Booker about Varela.   A native of Connecticut, Varela's game is rooted in a fundamentally sound style that contrasts with the faster-paced play often s...

Athletics celebrates all teams averaging above 3.0 GPA

Photo courtesy Trevecca athletics By Jett Johnson Sports Editor This year all Trevecca sports teams are averaging over a 3.0 GPA for the first time in history. Emily Moore, head volleyball coach and associate athletic director, says academic excellence is a focus of the athletic department. "I would say it's one of the most, if not the most important, parts of being a student-athlete. One of my favorite things to see is my athletes saying they're here because of volleyball and then their grades rise because of it. It helps me to know how motivated they are," said Moore. Moore is optimistic about not only her team reaching that mark, but the whole athletic department. "It's very encouraging. All of the coaching staff strives for that 3.0 and to see not only my team but...

Men’s and women’s basketball overviews

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Photo by Alayna Simons, Editor-in-Chief Men’s basketball Men’s Basketball has had a great turnaround season and is heading into tournament season with a strong record of 15-10. Men’s Basketball head coach Kevin Carroll is pleased with the team's success.  "It’s very gratifying. I don’t go into seasons predicting records and things of that nature. I’m more of a take-it day-by-day kind of guy, and I’m really grateful for the way our guys have come together. We’ve had a really good record at home and that’s been a big part of our overall success," said Carroll.  The men's team has four players averaging double figures in scoring, and according to Carroll, this is their preferred style of offense.  "That's really just our style of play. I ...
