Trevecca stunt is the only sport on campus not sponsored by the GSC.
Stunt is widely regarded as an “emerging sport” across the United States, with only a few conferences nationwide sponsoring it as a sport. One of those is the G-MAC, which Trevecca left this past summer.
“The only difference is that we don’t get recognition awards like Player of the Week and things like that. We also are playing against primarily D1 teams,” said Kelly Quigley, stunt head coach.
Emerging sports can still compete, but not in an organized conference like the NCAA or the GSC. Instead, they form their own conferences so teams can have a playoff and championship at the end of the year.
Last year, the stunt team made it all the way to the G-MAC championship, where Trevecca fell 13-9 to Ashland University. This year, the team will have a chance at the playoffs with the teams they play now, including the University of Kentucky.
“Even though we are playing up a level, we certainly can hold our own,” Quigley said
The team has proved this to be true this season with a record of 7-1 and a six-game winning streak.
Mark Elliott, Trevecca’s athletic director, said he believes the team should become sponsored in the next three years and that it will be sponsored by the NCAA before the GSC does.
There is a higher probability of getting 40 stunt teams in the NCAA to become sponsored than there is of getting the six needed to be sponsored by the GSC. This is because the NCAA is nationwide, while the GSC is a small part of the Southeast.
