Lacrosse team on standby, Trevecca hopes to secure team and space by fall of 2026

Trevecca will not be recruiting for a women’s lacrosse team in the spring of 2025 as intended.

Mark Elliott, Trevecca’s athletic director, said it could be up to two more years before a program is fully running on campus.

“We have promised to start the team, but the start date is still undetermined,” Elliott said.

Due to a lack of space and coaching staff, women’s lacrosse wasn’t pursued until the university switched from the GMAC Conference to the GSC in the summer of 2024.

Trevecca signed a deal with the GSC that allowed the university to join the conference in return for having a functioning women’s lacrosse team on campus by the fall of 2026.

There is still no space, but the athletic department has found a potential coach, jump-starting the formation of the team.

The coach, whom Elliott said he is not ready to name, will hopefully be hired after she finishes her season with her current team.

The only remaining issues are getting the team on campus by fall 2026 and securing space for the incoming team.

According to Elliott, the team will need another year or two before it is on campus and fully functioning.

Space, being arguably the hardest problem to overcome, has been a longstanding issue in this project.

Having men’s and women’s JV and varsity soccer, plus women’s lacrosse, would damage the current grass field. Elliott says it appears inevitable that the field will have to be turfed to prevent severe damage.

“Ultimately, that’s probably what we are going to have to do. Five teams would tear the grass up, and no grass could stand that much wear and tear,” Elliott said.

There are still plans to renovate the athletic facilities on campus to make more room for the athletes, but fundraising efforts are still in progress.
