Students work to host modified Friday Night Live event

By Isabel Landers A small group of students on campus are meeting every week to try and figure out how to still host the university's most popular social event of the year. Friday Night Live, an event based on the popular TV show Saturday Night Live, typically draws more than 200 students a year. After canceling last year's show because of COVID-19, organizers are in the process of figuring out how to host the event this year in line with restrictions on crowd gatherings. Rachel Thompson, social life director, hopes that the show is similar to how it has always been. Walden celebrates Black History Month on campus

Walden, the student club on campus dedicated to building community around primarily African American and Black students, was determined to celebrate and share Black History Month with others despite barriers to planning events during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Black history actually does exist here on Trevecca’s campus, and so I think it is important that we celebrate it,” said Lea Bryant, the president of Walden. Spiritual Deepening Week begins Tuesday

By Joshua Michel From Feb. 2-4, Trevecca will host a hybrid Spiritual Deepening Week. In-person services will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday. A recorded chapel session will be posted in the iAttended app on Thursday. Information regarding Spiritual Deepening Week will be distributed via the iAttended app. Last semester, videos were released every day for Spiritual Deepening Week, but the return of optional in-person chapel in the spring semester allowed for planning a mixture of physical and online. “Everyone is fatigued with video stuff. Alumni won’t be at Homecoming: Events planned for current students

By Diana Leyva Jacob Alumni won't be able to come to the hill for homecoming this year. Instead, campus officials are planning virtual events to attempt to connect with alumni in the midst of a pandemic that makes gatherings like homecoming impossible. “I think for our emotional well-being, it is important to try to capture as much of a sense of normalcy, so that's what we hope to do by sharing these virtual events,” said Michael Johnson, director of alumni and church engagement. An online kit is available for $25, which includes access to the virtual live stream, a Trevecca mask and t-shirt, candy, and popcorn. Commuter council to host drive in-movie in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

Update: SGA has corrected the later screening to 9 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. By Diana Leyva Jacob Commuter Council is hosting a drive-in movie night tonight at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Tidwell Parking Lot. The Disney film, “Coco”, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, will be screened. Refreshments such as Hot Cheetos, Takis, Gansitos, Sponch cookies as well as various flavors of Jarritos will be served. To comply with social distancing guidelines, the event is being held in one of the biggest parking lots on campus. Students will be required to distance while in their vehicles, to ensure the safety of everyone and also provide an optimum viewing experience. Student government elections will be held online

Election process to change amidst classes moving off campus. Beginning April 6 and ending on April 9, SGA executive elections will be taking place online via SurveyMonkey, an online survey software, which students will be able to access from an email sent on Monday. The necessity to change from the original plan of students voting using Google Forms at on-campus locations came after students were asked to leave campus as a safety plan amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “We wanted to find the perfect balance between vote security but also something that’s still relatively accessible. The Annual Southern Culture, Music and Civil Rights Tour Returns

The annual Southern Culture, Music and Civil Rights trip is returning during spring break, March 6-14. The trip will give students the opportunity to experience history by visiting key places where ordinary people participated in extraordinary events that shaped and challenged the southern way of life. “We felt that it was important of Trevecca students to learn about the pain and promise of the Civil Rights Movement, which took place in Nashville and neighboring cities of Montgomery and Birmingham,” said James Casler, director of the Center for Social Justice. Taste the Nations Returns

By Kayla Williamson Taste the Nations is returning this year on April 17 at 6:30pm in the Boone Convocation Center. Namaste, an international group at Trevecca, is once again hosting Taste the Nations. Friday Night Live is a Trevecca event based on the TV show Saturday Night Live. “Trevecca students perform live skits and create videos with themes that are centered about Trevecca culture,” said Emma Schmahl, social life director. “FNL has been around for many years.” According to Schmahl, the skit and video topics are chosen by students who meet weekly to brainstorm. By Kayla Williamson The men’s Pageant titled Mr. Trevecca was due to return Feb. 21 at 7pm in Boone. It was cancelled due to concerns over student behavior. “It was a decision made by a couple of people in student development,” said Emma Schmahl, social life director. “They were just worried about appropriateness of student behavior.” Lip Sync, the event set to replace Mr. Trevecca, was an idea that formed last semester.
