Efforts made to adapt to increase in diversity

By Michelle Loria Alvarado Contributor As the racial and cultural demographics of Trevecca’s student body changed, Trevecca’s administration responded by creating new student organizations and hiring an administrator to oversee efforts to unite the community. After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, faculty and students were concerned about how minorities at Trevecca did not have a space or someone to talk to about these themes.   “It was a product out of  the university wanting to become very intentional and very strategic about giving diverse students a place to have a voice and a place empower diverse students to create opportunities to share their culture and their ethnicity with their campus community,” said Iris Gordon, director of the Neighborhood Empower...

Curriculum prepares students for controversial conversations

By Antonia Lopez Staff Writer After COVID, Jon Burch, associate professor of management, saw a shift in the way people engaged in conversation regarding controversial topics. “Something happened during Covid. The unwillingness to discuss issues got even more intensified than before,” said Burch. That shift was one of the motivating factors that encouraged Burch to make changes in his classroom. The first step to change happened after Burch and Jonathan Bartling, vice president of student affairs and accreditation, attended a free conference led by Interfaith America. Interfaith America is an organization set to inspire, equip and connect leaders and institutions to unlock the potential of America's religious diversity, according to their website. The conference focused on t...

New group called Menergy created for African American men

By Michelle Loria Alvarado Contributor Students arrive at a room, grab some food, and sit down in a circle, pray together, then, one by one, talk about what they have on their minds and their hearts. “As the center of attention, we begin to address any concerns, any questions, anything that they have apprehension about and we give them the platform to be heard,” said Jeff Tate, examination specialist at FDIC and a Menergy mentor. Menergy is a group dedicated to supporting African American males enrolled at Trevecca. The group meets once a month and allows students to open up about their struggles and get help if needed. They currently have 20 members and about 6 mentors. “The best thing about the organization is you can just come and kind of let everything out. As college s...

Trevecca clinic still without a medical practitioner

By Lydia Chapman Contributor When Bayram Espinoza Cilingiroglu came down with Covid a few weeks ago, he could not seek help from the on-campus clinic because there was no provider. With no clinic provider he has turned to TimelyCare. “I was given a COVID self-test kit by my RD. I reported back to him the results were positive and I was connected with a school official about what to do next,” said Espinoza Cilingiroglu, a sophomore.  TimelyCare is a telehealth app designed to provide mental and physical health care. Users have access to doctors and counselors 24/7 and the app offers free meditation, yoga, and other self-care tips as well. It was founded in the summer of 2018 ...

International student population growing

By Kamryn Sanderfer Contributor Photos provided by International Student Council In the past 10 years Trevecca’s international student body has grown by 11%, moving from 18 students in 2014 to 206 students in the fall of 2023, but Trevecca’s international student body is lacking the cultural diversity that national averages statistically reported from 2023. “It’s better for Trevecca and for the international students too if we have more countries with larger populations,” said Rebecca Merrick, Trevecca’s Director of Global Engagement. “Behind Honduras, the countries represented only have single-digit numbers of people that are at Trevecca. We don’t even have another country that’s in the 10 to 20 range.” According to Merrick, 99 of the 206 international students enrolled at...
