Men and Women’s Golf Aiming For a Strong New Season

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor David Head, head coach of men’s and women’s golf, has high expectations for his team this year. “My expectation for the golf programs for this upcoming season is that both teams will continue to improve and be able to push to win a GMAC championship in late April. Other expectations I have are that both teams will be successful in the classroom and continue to grow their relationship with Jesus,” said Head. Head is planning on keeping with the same formula he has in place every season. “The formula for success is pretty much the same every year. We will honor God in everything we do and be prepared for any possible situation that comes up in a round of golf. We will minimize the mistakes we make on the golf course and spend a lot of time working...

New Weight Room for Athletes Plans to Open Next Month

By Nathan Mckissick Staff Writer Trevecca athletes will have their own space to workout beginning next month. The facility, located in the TSAC building, will feature 10 weight racks, a turf area and multiple machines. It will be strictly for athletes on campus for team workouts. This facility will cost the school over $100,000 dollars and is being paid for by the school. “We now have 360 athletes in our athletic department, which is roughly 25 percent of our student body.” said Mark Elliot, the university’s athletic director. “This new weight room gives us more opportunity to adequately train these student-athletes.” With Trevecca athletics moving into a new conference in 2024, the facility gives the university a better chance to get athletes from all over the country. ...

Trevecca STUNT Team Getting Ready for Debut Season

By David Elvir Staff Writer Trevecca’s newly added STUNT program is officially underway and is getting ready for its inaugural season. Announced in December 2022, Trevecca will feature in its first STUNT competition in February 2024. Kelly Quigley was appointed as the head coach to lead this first STUNT season. Quigley has a competitive background with the South Jersey Storm (2006-2011), World Cup All-Stars (2011- 2014) and the University of Delaware (2014-2016). She had also already worked with Trevecca’s cheerleading program as a volunteer. Quigley’s experience in the sport accelerated Trevecca’s plan to integrate the sport at the university, as it was originally planned to be introduced in the next five years. “I think just talking about my love for STUNT and my knowledge...

Men and Women’s Soccer Season Underway

By Antonia Lopez Staff Writer Trevecca’s men’s soccer team began the 2023 season optimistic in hopes of competing in conference play and developing players’ abilities both on and off the field. Danny Leavy, head coach, is confident in the skillset found in this year’s roster and has high hopes to succeed in the postseason as well as in conference match-ups. “The team I have this year is strong enough to compete with any other team in our conference. That’s the exciting thing,” Leavy said. Leavy’s team mentality is important to those who are a part of the program, and that leadership standard is set by Zachary Polk, the team’s captain. Polk has been the captain for two years and is a tremendous leader among his peers, according to Leavy. Polk leads his team through being p...

Cross Country Runner Makes Comeback After Car Accident

Photo curtesy of Trevecca Athletics By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Samantha Rosencrants, sophomore women’s cross country runner, has returned to competition after a season- ending car accident that occurred in September of last year. She is glad to be back running again in just a year after needing physical therapy to stand and walk. “It honestly feels unreal. I’ve had a lot of healing from the hospital to going back home. It’s a very unreal experience,” said Rosencrants. Austin Selby, head coach of men’s and women’s cross country, is also very glad that Rosencrants is back in competition. “It’s huge to have her back. I just think back to this time last year after the wreck. We didn’t know whether we would race or not. To have her practicing and competing is great,” sa...

Basketball player first in history to move from JV to varsity

By Wes Sharpe Staff Writer Photo courtesy Trevecca Athletics As the clock hit 0 on February 15th it almost seemed that DeRon Medley Jr would have to spend another year on the JV level despite averaging double digit points and a handful of assists in the previous two year.   “After the game I went back and showered and got a phone call from coach Alex,” said Medley  Alex Huisman who was the head JV coach and served as interim head coach for the Varsity men’s team.   “He asked what I was doing the next day and I told him work. He then told me I needed to clear my schedule because I was going to be moving up and traveling with the Varsity guys to Kentucky Wesleyan,” said Medley.   Medley described the moment as “a moment I will never...

Exercise science professor awarded teaching excellence award

By Lauren Steinbrook Staff Writer Photo courtesy to Trevecca Marketing Aaron Hall chuckles a little when he recalls that his application to work at Trevecca first ended up in the department chair’s junk email. “It was a God thing for me to come here. I never thought about teaching, and I didn’t know anything about Trevecca,” said Hall, associate professor of exercise science. “My application went into Dr. Patterson’s junk mail, so it was by chance she found my application…I wouldn’t be here without God.”  Hall is this year’s recipient of Trevecca’s Teaching Excellence Award. On March 2, Tom Middendorf, university provost, presented Hall with the annual award given to a faculty member. “He is known for deeply investing in the lives of students,” said Middendorf during...

Trevecca parts ways with men’s basketball coach Omar Mance

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Photo courtesy of Trevecca Athletics Trevecca parted ways with men’s basketball coach Omar Mance with a record of 2-19 in their overall season at the time and 1-14 in conference play.  Mark Elliot, athletic director, said a lot of factors went into the decision to replace Mance. “As time went on, there were wonderful things about the program that a lot of people wouldn’t necessarily see. A team is way more than just a record, but a record is still important. As the team continued to struggle in the wins and loss column, it became evident that there’s a piece of the program that we need to take into consideration,” said Elliot.  Mance came to Trevecca in the summer of 2018. His best season was in 2019-2020 when the team posted a...

Trevecca adds stunt and women’s lacrosse teams

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Two new women’s sports teams will be added to Trevecca athletics. A stunt team and a women’s lacrosse team were both recently approved, and planning is underway to launch both teams. Mark Elliot, the athletic director for Trevecca Nazarene University, said the thought process behind choosing a new program to add to the athletic department is a “multi-level decision.” “First, what team we bring on is an enrollment driver and helps with admissions. Second, the conference encourages us to have new programs to compete for more conference championships,” said Elliot. Cheer team at UCA College Nationals - Photo courtesy of Trevecca Athletics Kelley Quigley was recently named the stunt team coach, a decision Elliot said he is excited about. “...
