New Worship gathering allows ministry students to practice skills

By Alayna Simons Editor-in-Chief Daniel Magee, a graduate assistant of student development, wanted a place where he could practice his passion of preaching at Trevecca Community Church. After approaching Jeremy Height, the college and community engagement pastor at TCC, about his eagerness, they realized that there was a lack of opportunity to preach on campus. During the summer, Magee thought that there should be a space where young adults could practice their gifts in ministry, and from that conversation, the creation of Pneuma began. “It was really cool because we weren't looking to start something, but we recognized the need and started talking about a way to meet that need, which allowed me and Jeremy to do more of what we are called to do,” said Magee, the leader of Pneum...

Students work to find balance between finals, holiday season and obligations

By Ellie Wilson Contributor With finals on the horizon, Trevecca’s campus has changed its tone. The library, once a peaceful, quiet place is now abuzz with students cramming for exams. Megan Carver, a senior psychology major who works as the advanced student supervisor at the library speaks to the change in the environment. “I’ve noticed a pattern each year,” Carver says. “It gets a lot more chaotic around finals. The difference between regular semester and finals week is that there's a lot more action around here. ” Carver is not the only person who has noticed the impact of finals on campus culture. Kat Abraham, a freshman barista at 1901 speaks to the impact of finals season. “There is definitely more people here than usual,” Abraham says. “Sunday is usually a ghost town bu...

New study abroad options open to students

By Mia Agee Assistant News Editor Amidst the colorful streets of Florence, Italy, senior worship arts major Alanna Ziegler discovered something more valuable than the city’s Renaissance architecture, art and gelato. She discovered a home in her host home’s hospitality, the ability to converse and share life with Italians, and the freedom to go out on her own and explore Florence. Sommer Bright, the graduate assistant who currently runs the study abroad program, is largely the one who made this opportunity possible for Ziegler. In the fall of 2021, Bright worked together with Katie Miller, the faculty in charge of the study abroad program at the time, to add WorldStrides as an additional affiliate partner to Trevecca’s study abroad program. “Now, we have the partnership, which h...

‘The Eras of Trevecca’ Homecoming 2023 Schedule

By Sol Ayala Online News Editor On Saturday Nov. 4, the homecoming parade will be making its comeback after last year’s parade getting cancelled last minute due to weather conditions. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Trevecca homecoming parade. The structure of the parade is striving for each float to represent a time during the 50 years since the parade started. Madison Triplett, sophomore class president,  along with the sophomore class council, oversee all preparations for the parade, and they picked the theme for this year’s parade. Usually there is not an overall theme to go along with the parade, but with this year being a special anniversary, she thought that this year needed a theme.  The theme for the 2023 homecoming parade will be walking us through “the Er...

Ongoing Battle of Ants in the UC Parking Lots

By Julia Ballard Staff Writer Halee Brumbaugh, University Commons resident, wasn’t far down the road when she realized ants were crawling out of her air vents. “I was looking at the road and little ants were just coming out my air vents and crawling all around us,” said Brumbaugh. Trevecca students have been facing a recurring ant problem since before the start of the semester. After 19 work orders from the 270 students living in UC and a local pest company spraying seven times since Aug. 1, students continue to find ants in their cars, their parking lots and even their kitchens. Since the beginning of the semester, ants have infested cars, apartments and various buildings ranging from Jackson Music Building to University Terrace Apartments, according to Zack Church, res...

Chapel Theme Addresses ‘Epidemic of Loneliness’

Photo courtesy Trevecca Marketing By Mia Agee Assistant News Editor Prior to attending Trevecca, Naomi Akinbade, senior biology major and student body chaplain, had been deeply wounded by her friendships and other close relationships. Though she considers herself an extrovert and an avid people person, these “love wounds” caused her to maintain shallow relationships and isolate herself from others. Once she confessed her struggles to her friends and began practicing vulnerability–a challenge she said God placed on her heart–she discovered that many of her friends were facing some of the same things. This calling, paired with conversations with Erik Gernand, university chaplain, birthed the idea for this year’s chapel theme–“a binding together in love.” The university’s cha...

Walden celebrates the success of the first Black Renaissance

By Grace Beckner Editor-in-Chief Walden student leaders - Maya Smith, Benise Dunhart, Howard Dodd, and Cie Kelly Just over a year ago, Walden student leaders, Trevecca’s Black student association, dreamt of hosting a safe space for Black business owners to gather on campus. This semester, Maya Smith, a sophomore social work major and events coordinator and secretary for Walden, was able to help make the dream a reality. “We wanted to highlight the successes of Black people, so we chose to have it in Black History Month on purpose,” Smith said. “When people reflect on Black History Month, it’s usually on things associated with slavery or pain or suffering. This wasn’t like that. This was a time for people to celebrate.” On Feb. 23, Walden hosted a Black Renaissan...

Exercise science professor awarded teaching excellence award

By Lauren Steinbrook Staff Writer Photo courtesy to Trevecca Marketing Aaron Hall chuckles a little when he recalls that his application to work at Trevecca first ended up in the department chair’s junk email. “It was a God thing for me to come here. I never thought about teaching, and I didn’t know anything about Trevecca,” said Hall, associate professor of exercise science. “My application went into Dr. Patterson’s junk mail, so it was by chance she found my application…I wouldn’t be here without God.”  Hall is this year’s recipient of Trevecca’s Teaching Excellence Award. On March 2, Tom Middendorf, university provost, presented Hall with the annual award given to a faculty member. “He is known for deeply investing in the lives of students,” said Middendorf during...
