The morning brew at 1901 has a new flavor this semester. The on-campus coffee shop has switched its coffee supplier from 8th & Roast to Frothy Monkey, a move that’s stirring up conversation among students and staff.

Campus dining leaders said the decision was made after learning that Frothy Monkey was popular among students and faculty.

“It was mostly guest feedback that prompted the switch. Folks would tell me their favorite coffee shop outside of campus was Frothy Monkey,” said Collin Neal, retail manager.

For many students, the most noticeable change is the taste. Some regulars say their coffee tastes better than it did before.

“Overall, I’ve noticed that the coffee tastes better. Before, I noticed the espresso would taste burnt. I think it had more to do with the roast rather than the machine,” said Chloe Fox, a junior religion major.

Frothy Monkey, a Nashville-based coffeehouse with locations across Nashville and Franklin, is known for its locally roasted coffee and bakery items.

For baristas at 1901, the change has meant working with a new set of beans and recipes. Teanna Richey, a barista at 1901, said the difference is clear in how customers respond.

“I’ve noticed a new change in the customers, especially. They absolutely love it, and the quality is a lot better. We’ve gotten a lot more positive feedback,” said Richey.
