Trevecca’s Student Government Association has completed elections for the upcoming school year to continue upholding its mission of student empowerment and leadership.

Student Government Association is a group of elected students who represent student interests within the Trevecca community. SGA consists of Associated Student Body officers and the various officers of the four classes. They work alongside the Center for Student Development in providing leadership through service.

Natalie Specht, director of student life, explained that the current executive team has aimed to empower students and thinks there is no better way to do that than by voting.

“I am excited to get to see the election process for myself. A goal for both the executive and general councils was that they really wanted to empower students and look at ways to represent well, so I’m excited to see how that sets a tone for next year,” said Specht.

Since the beginning of February, SGA executives have been preparing and interviewing for the executive council and general council elections being held in March.

There are a total of eighteen general council positions available and six executive positions available that students can run for ranging from ASB President to Freshman Class Chaplain and will be voted on by the student body.

Students who make it past an interview process will be allowed to campaign along with giving speeches at Monday night chapel which will be held March 11 at 6 p.m. (Executive Council) and March 25 at 6 p.m. (General Council). Following the speeches, ballots will open to vote on via email until the following Friday.

Organizing the elections has been Jade Hunter, ASB Vice President.

Hunter has used her position to help cultivate this empowerment mission through club organization and has also gained insight into how the SGA impacts campus as a whole.

“Before I was on it, I really didn’t realize how much SGA does. Everything that we do is so important for life on campus and so it’s crucial that people trust whoever is in these positions to be able to be there for the student body,” said Hunter.

The start of the 2023 school year was not a year of normalcy for SGA.

Specht became the director in October 2023, following the combined leadership of Megan McGhee, assistant dean of student life, and Justin Jose, director of leadership and community engagement.

“Having spent the initial training with the executive team, one of their big goals was to truly represent the student body. Not only through listening to the interests of students, but positively representing through diversity,” said Jose.
