Courtesy of Wes Sharpe / Trevecca Athletics On the men’s side of things, they have played two tournaments thus far – one in Virginia and the other in Mississippi. In Virginia, the men placed 12th  overall and fourth overall in Mississippi.  “We are mostly focusing on our short game around the greens. Obviously, finding the fairway is a big thing but what we try to focus on is our wedges,” said Maddox Burton, junior men’s golf player. Burton had an impressive contribution to the team placing so high with an average of 4.10 strokes a hole and finished within the top 10 with 37...

Men’s basketball transfer shoots for the best in final season

By Trevor West Contributor Jikari Johnson. Photo courtesy Trevecca Athletics. While averaging 17 points per game and leading most of the stats for Ferrum College, Jikari Johnson took a chance and transferred to Trevecca for his senior year.  The shooting guard won a starting role with the Trojans and is averaging 19 points and 3 rebounds per game while shooting 53% from the field and 45% from three-point range, despite the difficulties of transferring late in his college career.  Johnson played his junior season for the Ferrum Panthers, where he played and started 27 games and led the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game. He shot 45.9% from the field, 38.5% from the three-point line and 82.9% from the free-throw line. He averaged 5.1 rebounds per game and was ...

Athletics celebrates all teams averaging above 3.0 GPA

Photo courtesy Trevecca athletics By Jett Johnson Sports Editor This year all Trevecca sports teams are averaging over a 3.0 GPA for the first time in history. Emily Moore, head volleyball coach and associate athletic director, says academic excellence is a focus of the athletic department. "I would say it's one of the most, if not the most important, parts of being a student-athlete. One of my favorite things to see is my athletes saying they're here because of volleyball and then their grades rise because of it. It helps me to know how motivated they are," said Moore. Moore is optimistic about not only her team reaching that mark, but the whole athletic department. "It's very encouraging. All of the coaching staff strives for that 3.0 and to see not only my team but...

Men’s and Women’s track teams kick off season by setting records

By Jett Johnson Sports Editor Men’s and women’s track & field had a strong start to the season at the Ramapo College Season Opener in New York City. Three records were broken at the opener in the 60m dash timed at 6.93 by freshman Zion Griffin, men’s long jump with a leap of 6.30m by freshman Dayton Floyd, and 400m dash with a school record of 50:19 by junior Lucas Baggott. Austin Selby, head coach, is encouraged by this performance. “Feeling really good. It was great to have the early in-town rust buster at Vanderbilt. It led to us having overall one of our best meets we have ever had up in NYC,” said Selby. The men’s team has had a strong start this year, and Selby thinks it could be a sign of a successful year. “I think this will be the first year where we truly...

New Weight Room for Athletes Plans to Open Next Month

By Nathan Mckissick Staff Writer Trevecca athletes will have their own space to workout beginning next month. The facility, located in the TSAC building, will feature 10 weight racks, a turf area and multiple machines. It will be strictly for athletes on campus for team workouts. This facility will cost the school over $100,000 dollars and is being paid for by the school. “We now have 360 athletes in our athletic department, which is roughly 25 percent of our student body.” said Mark Elliot, the university’s athletic director. “This new weight room gives us more opportunity to adequately train these student-athletes.” With Trevecca athletics moving into a new conference in 2024, the facility gives the university a better chance to get athletes from all over the country. ...

Men and Women’s Soccer Season Underway

By Antonia Lopez Staff Writer Trevecca’s men’s soccer team began the 2023 season optimistic in hopes of competing in conference play and developing players’ abilities both on and off the field. Danny Leavy, head coach, is confident in the skillset found in this year’s roster and has high hopes to succeed in the postseason as well as in conference match-ups. “The team I have this year is strong enough to compete with any other team in our conference. That’s the exciting thing,” Leavy said. Leavy’s team mentality is important to those who are a part of the program, and that leadership standard is set by Zachary Polk, the team’s captain. Polk has been the captain for two years and is a tremendous leader among his peers, according to Leavy. Polk leads his team through being p...
