Spotify offers discounted plan for students

Being a college student is expensive enough, so Spotify and Hulu are teaming up to give students a discounted plan.

Spotify’s Premium Student plan offers a one-month free trial for new members, after which qualifying students will pay $5.99 monthly, $4 cheaper than the regular individual plan. The discount is good through graduation. In addition, Premium Student includes ad-supported Hulu for no additional cost.

Spotify Premium usually costs $10.99 a month, while Hulu with ads is usually $7.99 monthly: for both, that’s almost $230 a year. While the Spotify Student plan only costs almost $70 for a year–a savings of around $155.

“I was paying for Hulu, but since learning about their student plan last year, I was able to save over half what I was paying a month, which is a big deal on a college budget,” said Ryah Smith, sophomore music business major.

In a press release published by Hulu, the company stated the subscription plan brings the two popular services together and allows subscribers to enjoy a world of ad-free music on Spotify Premium, as well as the more than 75,000 current and classic hit television shows and movies on Hulu’s ad-supported service.

If you have Spotify Premium, visit Spotify’s Premium Student page to verify your school. You will receive an email confirming your eligibility within a few days. The email will prompt you to create a new Spotify account or attach the discount to your existing one.

You can still participate if you’re already subscribed to both Spotify and Hulu. You can combine your accounts to get Hulu for free. Just change your existing Hulu email account to the one used for Spotify.

“I’ve been using the Spotify bundle for over three years because I could use it with my dual enrollment email in high school, and I haven’t regretted it since,” said Jayce Yarbrough, a sophomore nursing major. “I love that I can listen to Dolly Parton and watch The Bachelor for the price of one cup of coffee.”

In addition to Hulu’s partnership with Spotify, Hulu has its own student plan where you can get just Hulu with ads for $1.99 a month, which the website says is 75% off the regular price.
