Trevecca basketball teams to compete in nationally televised games

Trevecca men’s soccer takes hard loss on Saturday against Salem International

By Andrew Preston and Conner Adams The Trevecca Nazarene University men’s soccer team lost 3-2 Saturday night to Salem International. The loss was tough as their conference opponent from West Virginia eliminated them last year in the post season. The loss puts Trevecca at 3-4 (2-2) on the year while Salem improves to 4-2 (2-1). Coming off a dramatic comeback win against Ohio Valley University last Tuesday, Trevecca has now lost its last three matches. After an uneventful first half Saturday, the first goal was scored by Salem player Mohamed Ali Khalaf with the assist by Samir Anzil at 52:12 in the second half. It took Trevecca nearly 10 minutes to respond, but they scored the equalizing goal at 62:27 on a corner kick from Jordan Gilmore, that bounced off the head of one of Salem’s own pla...

Trevecca soccer player arrested: accused of robbing CVS pharmacy

Jackson Boonstra, 19. Source: Metro Police Department By Nadia Smith A Trevecca men's soccer player was arrested this morning for allegedly robbing a CVS pharmacy. Jackson Boonstra, a freshman, is accused of robbing the store at 735 Harding Pike where he got away with about 500 pills from the pharmacy counter, according Metro police. Metro officers received a tip that Boonstra, 19, would arrive at a church parking lot on Belmont Park Terrace. The officers surveyed the parking lot until Boonstra arrived at 1:50 a.m. and he was taken into custody without incident, according to a Metro police news release. (more…)

TIA begins four sports next week

By Joseph Hutton Starting next week, the Trevecca Intramural Association will begin offering four new sports. Dodgeball, tennis and soccer will return to the list of spring intramural sports that Trevecca students, faculty and staff can join. Indoor volleyball will be a new sport this year for the TIA. Basketball coaches set win records

By Collin Welker Both of Trevecca’s basketball coaches have made school history this year. Sam Harris, the men’s basketball coach, has now won 326 games as Trevecca coach. Gary Van Atta, the women’s basketball coach, passed the 600 win mark in January and now has 190 wins at Trevecca under his belt. “There is not a win that really pops in my head. We have beaten ranked opponents before,” said Harris. Chris Elliot, junior shooting guard on the men's team, said playing for Harris means being pushed to be the best on and off the court. “He’s a good guy, leads by Christ, and pushes us to be better athletes on the court and better people off the court,” said Elliot. “It is really cool knowing you are a part of history when you leave here.” (more…)

Trevecca approved as NCAAA Division II school

By Christy Ulmet After three years of candidacy, Trevecca Nazarene University is now officially the first university in Middle Tennessee to be NCAA Division II. Trevecca began the admittance process for NCAA Division II in 2011, and shortly after that joined the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), which would eventually become a Division II conference. Beginning September 1, 2014, Trevecca’s 15 intercollegiate teams will be eligible for post-season play, and the university can now display the NCAA logo. (more…)

Trevecca Women’s Basketball Senior Day

Brittany Eller Spikes Tumor

By Tyler Comer Brittany Eller is making her way back to the court after being diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. Last season, Eller, junior, was one of the best players on the Trojan’s volleyball team, leading the team in kills and total attack attempts. However, at the conclusion of the season not all was well. “After Thanksgiving, I started noticing my hair was thinning out, I was having three to four headaches a day that lasted for three to four hours at a time,” Eller said. When the symptoms didn’t subside, Eller chose to see a doctor and was then referred to a neurologist who, after an MRI and other tests, diagnosed her with a benign brain tumor in the pituitary gland on her brain. Trevecca A.D. making plans for new conference play

By Tyler Comer Trevecca athletes will face new opponents next year as the school transitions to a new Division II conference. Part of becoming a Division II school has meant finding a new conference home. Trevecca did that in February when it joined the newly forming G-MAC conference. But, athletic director Mark Elliott won’t get rid of all of Trevecca’s NAIA rivals. “I wanted the coaches to play a 50-50 schedule between Division II and NAIA schools,” Athletic Director Mark Elliott, said. TNU men’s basketball headed to tournament

The season may be over, but the Trojans aren’t done playing yet. The Trevecca men’s basketball team will play over spring break in the region tournament. The region tournament will take place on March the 8th, 9th, and 10th, and if the Trojans win they will receive a birth in the national tournament starting March the 12th in Grace, Indiana. (more…)
