Trevecca to Offer Free Women’s Self-Defense Class Nov. 13

Jasmin Enriquez Martinez Features Editor Women on campus will have the opportunity to learn self-defense techniques at a free class on Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. in the Zelma Auditorium. Flyer provided by Emma Grace Hicks, 2027 class president Hosted by the junior class council, the class will teach techniques to help students learn how to defend themselves and build confidence.  Kat Abraham, a senior creative writing major, will instruct the class. The class is part of a ‘practical events’ series, designed to teach students real life skills. Keturah Tobias Senior Reporter As part of the homecoming traditions, Trevecca will kick off homecoming weekend with a chapel service on Nov. 6. "We believe in starting the weekend off in worship and gratitude to God for bringing us all together on the Hill is the best way to begin,” said Jennifer Showalter, engagement officer at  Trevecca.  For decades, the homecoming traditions at Trevecca have been treasured traditions that bring alumni, students, staff, faculty, and families to "The Hill." Trevecca Theatre presents Disney’s Newsies opening Oct. 31

Free flu shot clinic aims to keep campus healthy

By Lydia Chapman Senior Reporter Trevecca students and the surrounding community will have the chance to roll up their sleeves and protect themselves this fall.  The university’s Department of Nursing will host a free flu shot clinic on Tuesday, Oct. 28, beginning at 8 a.m. in Trevecca Towers 1 before moving to the third floor of Jernigan Student Center during chapel. The clinic will remain open until 3 p.m. Nursing professor Christy Twinning, who is sponsoring the event, said the idea came from recognizing barriers students faced in getting vaccinated, including cost, transportation, and time. “We saw a need,” Twinning said. “Our nursing students needed to be vaccinated to go to clinicals, but there were some barriers, such as cost and transportation. Homecoming court nominations now open to all students

By Michelle Loria Alvarado Executive Editor Homecoming court nominations opened Oct. 6 and will close Oct. 8 at 11:59 p.m.  “Homecoming court is a fun tradition that's been around in Trevecca for a long time, and it's where students can vote for their peers and who they think represents their class well,” said Natalie Specht, director of student life.  The process is divided into three rounds of elections: During the first round, students nominate 10 males and 10 females from their academic class. By Maven Mcgregory Renea Bruce, a junior social work major at Trevecca, is already making $160 monthly student loan payments—a rare move among college students, but one inspired by her father’s advice to tackle debt before it becomes overwhelming. In a world where most students graduate with debt, Bruce is choosing to face it early.  Kevin Reed, director of student financial services, said he doesn’t have information on what percentage of college students leave Trevecca with student loan debt, but according to Forbes, more than half of all college students leave college with debt.  According to Forbes, Americans owe $1.75 trillion in student loans, with the average borrower carrying $28,950 in debt. It feels like one mistake could cost me a lot," said Johnson. According to a recent survey from CNET, 33% of Gen Zers said they feared making a mistake, 18% said they worried their information could be at risk to scammers, and 15% said they were concerned they would owe more to the IRS than they could afford.
