Trevecca students spent this week celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with several events from Jan. 19 to Jan. 24.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was all about serving our neighbors and serving our neighbors well, serving communities,” said Jamie Casler, director of the Center for Social Justice and coordinator of these events.
The goal of these events was to celebrate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through community service and engagement.
“I think there’s something special about Nashville students. It was Nashville students, the student movement, that inspired Dr. King, and that gets me excited about service,” said Casler.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Nashville college students, faculty, and staff will gather to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a day of learning, reflecting, social justice, and community service. Trevecca students will meet in the Bud Robinson lobby on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11:00 a.m., to travel to Tennessee State University to complete service projects with local organizations like Preston Taylor Ministries, Trevecca Urban Farm, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.
“It’s really a joint day of service. I call it a unified student body serving for one day. There’s about 700 to 800 students who come together to this event,” said Casler.
Upon event completion, students will participate in a panel discussion to discuss their experiences and the importance of events like these. Trevecca students can earn up to two chapel credits from this service opportunity. In order to participate and be eligible for chapel credit, students must sign up using the link on the iAttended app and complete the included waiver during the sign up process.
