SGA brings back “Big Game Show” for second year

By Macey Smith Staff Writer Trevecca students have the chance to show off their skills, cheer on their friends, and win prizes at the upcoming “Big Game Show” competition on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 7-9 p.m. in the Boone Convocation Center.   This is the second year SGA puts on the “Big Game Show,” which mimics popular game shows such as Family Feud, Jeopardy, and The Price is Right. Trevecca students join poverty simulation to better understand low-income challenges

Alana Mclaughlin Senior Reporter Trevecca students participated in a Poverty Simulation on Monday, Nov. 17, in the Boone Convocation Center to raise awareness about what it’s like to live in a typical low-income family. Around 88 participants assumed the roles of 26 different families facing poverty. The task of the “families” was to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.” Jamie Casler, director of the Center for Social Justice, served as coordinator for this event.  “Part of my responsibility and role as director is to provide experiences for students to experience poverty, so they can empathize with the people that we’re serving in our community,” said Casler.  This event, based on the MACA (Missouri Association for ...

Black History Month events planned

By Michelle Loria Alvarado Contributor Trevecca will kick off  Black History Month with several events until April with the theme “Many cultures, one community.”   The goal is to be intentional about celebrating experiences outside of the dominant culture at Trevecca which can lead to a more healing community, said Terrence Schoefield, ASC provost for mission excellence and reconciliation.   “People hurt in isolation and a lot of times when you get in a community and have those social conversations..you understand about the experience [of other cultures],” he said. Boonearoo X returns to campus

by Claudia Villeda Boonearoo X will be held on Saturday, May 1 in the quad.  Trevecca's annual music festival is back, headlined this year by The New Respects and Jordy Searcy. Various activities such as a painting station and a flower wall photo booth will also be available. The event will start at 3 p.m. and admission is free. Boonearoo is a casual hangout event for students to enjoy before finals, said Rachel Thompson, associate student body social life director.  Special sets for this live show include performances by local Belmont artists The Brothers Holk and Watson Maack, Trevecca alumnus Gabrielle Grace and an original spoken word by Trevecca students of color.  Boonearoo is normally held in the spring before the end of the semester. First Generation Graduate Hired as Diversity Coordinator

By Bailey Basham When Brodrick Thomas was younger, it was his dream to play football at Auburn. For Thomas, however, getting through school wasn’t easy. “My mom dropped out of junior high school, so she didn’t have any education and didn’t really understand it very much. My dad died when I was in fifth grade, and she had to take on multiple jobs to keep us fed and under shelter. She didn’t have the knowledge to help me, but she was always a strong advocate of education,” said Thomas. “When I first went to college, my mom had no idea of how to help me in any way.”   (more…)
