From the draft to the field, students at Trevecca have created a new football league that is quickly becoming a campus favorite.
The league, which launched this semester, features 5-on-5 touch football, with six teams, each drafted from a pool of students who registered to play.
The games will be fast-paced, with 10-minute halves, and the league will include traditional elements like kickoffs, field goals, and extra points.
The spring football league at Trevecca was inspired by the end of the Super Bowl.
Friends Isaac Temko, T.J. Weeks, John Henry Knotts, and Jared Fuller came up with the idea while watching the game and realizing they missed having football to watch on Sundays.
With no intramural football league planned for the spring, they decided to take matters into their own hands and create their own league.
“We just wanted to keep playing football,” Temko said. “So, we asked around, and there were plenty of students who wanted to play, too.”
The three organized the league, secured flags, and held a draft in late February to ensure the teams were evenly matched.
According to the league’s Instagram account, around 65 students have signed up to join any of the six teams.
The teams in the league include the Benson Beaters, McClurkan McDoubles, Boone Bullies, Jernigan Jits, Wakefield Whoppers, and Greathouse Gamblers.
By making an Instagram account to start the league, the students got the conversation going around campus about football at Trevecca.
The draft day event, held in front of a crowd of eager students, was filled with excitement and anticipation as captains selected their teams.
With a mix of competitive spirit and fun, each team was ready to bring its best game to the field.
“We’ve signed a new head coach, Jacob Raines, and we’re ready to elevate our game this year,” said Jake Parrish, the general manager of the Boone Bullies, on their Instagram account.
Each team has been bringing its own flair to the competition, with the teams building their rosters and social media presence, which has gotten students buzzing.
Through their social media, they have encouraged fan interaction, saying they want fellow students to come out and support in order to get everyone involved.
Students have been taking the rivalries and making fun of each other on the teams’ individual Instagram accounts.
The six teams have already started playing, with some games sponsored by the parents of team captains to provide players with new uniforms.
