Walden club’s fourth annual Black Renaissance festival connects students with Nashville entrepreneurs

By Alana McLaughlin TrevEchoes - Parker Henningsen Senior Reporter Trevecca’s fourth annual Black Renaissance encourages community members to taste, celebrate and experience Black culture. Iris Gordon, Walden Club advisor, said the goal of these events is to celebrate how different cultures impact each other. Hosted by the Walden Club, the speakeasy, Harlem Renaissance-themed festival took place on Feb. 20 from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. in the Boone Convocation Center. By Michelle Loria Alvarado Contributor Trevecca will kick off  Black History Month with several events until April with the theme “Many cultures, one community.”   The goal is to be intentional about celebrating experiences outside of the dominant culture at Trevecca which can lead to a more healing community, said Terrence Schoefield, ASC provost for mission excellence and reconciliation.   “People hurt in isolation and a lot of times when you get in a community and have those social conversations..you understand about the experience [of other cultures],” he said. Walden celebrates Black History Month on campus

Walden, the student club on campus dedicated to building community around primarily African American and Black students, was determined to celebrate and share Black History Month with others despite barriers to planning events during the COVID-19 pandemic.  “Black history actually does exist here on Trevecca’s campus, and so I think it is important that we celebrate it,” said Lea Bryant, the president of Walden.  Walden held its first event of the month on Feb. 4 at Trevecca Community Church; a “get-to-know Black History Month” presentation for the students at KidPOWER, the on-campus after-school program offered free to families in the Napier-Sudekum Community.  “Going through all the classrooms, there were really good discussions being held and the kids a...
