International club host’s fourth annual Taste the Nations Event

By Shadaye Hunnicutt Singing, dancing and the smells of food from around the world filled TSAC as students, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate the many cultures represented on campus The International Student Association presented its 4th annual Taste the Nations event on Friday, April 23. For the past four years ISAT has hosted the Taste the Nations event as a celebration of international students and their cultures. The event featured songs performed by international students, food from around the world and even dances like the Cameroon Dance. (more…)

Trevecca students raise money for reentry into Croatia

By Amy Taylor A group of five Trevecca students and alumni need to raise about $100,000 if their dream of establishing a Nazarene ministry in Croatia is going to come true. The Trevecca students, who will serve as Mission Corps volunteers through the Church of the Nazarene, are planning to leave for Croatia in August  as the Nazarene Church’s first missionaries there in five years. “It’s a really good opportunity and a huge step for the Nazarene Church letting college students go in,” Emily Humble, a member of the team, said. Gospel choir sings in Haitian churches

More than 60 members of Trevecca’s new gospel choir spent last weekend singing in Haitian Nazarene churches in Orlando, FL. The choir, which formed this semester, took its first road trip to five small Haitian congregations to minister to Haitian community in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake and to promote Trevecca to the students of the Haitian churches. “I think we accomplished everything we set out to accomplish and more. We were both touched by lives and touched lives, we saw a great response from the Haitian students, and our students grew through the experience,” said Dr. John Ray, the director of the Gospel Choir. Local Boy Scout maps Trevecca’s trees as school works to be arboretum site

By Rachel Swann With the help of a local Boy Scout, Trevecca is on its way to becoming a national arboretum site. Which means the trees and plant life on campus will be recognized as a living museum of nature. On March 31, a Boy Scout, a former Trevecca president and a former professor joined Trevecca science professor Chris Farrell to tour the campus and begin mapping the trees. They spent the day riding in the Boone Buggy discussing the history of the canopy of trees. Their guide? A map of Trevecca’s trees published in 1970 by Jerry Costa for his thesis at Peabody College in Nashville. Lucas Wallace, 17, is a local Boy Scout working on his Eagle Scout rank.  Homer Adams, 82, was president of Trevecca from 1979-1991. John Dix 85, served as professor emeritus of biology from 19...

Two Trevecca students, two John Lennon contests

By Adam Wadding Two Trevecca students have been named finalists in two prestigious song writing contests. Junior Stefanie Wienecke and Sophomore Andrea Corzine both placed in contests named after the Beatles legend John Lennon. The BMI John Lennon Songwriting program, entered by Corzine, awards scholarships to the best original composition for vocal instrumental performance. Corzine is among the top 40 finalists of the 96 contestants that entered.  She’ll know in June if she’s won a $10,000 scholarship or one of the $5,000 scholarships the runners-up will receive. Student petition now in hands of Trevecca administration

Students meet with an administrator in regards to the non-renewal of an education professor's contract By Morgan Daniels Six students met on Wednesday with an administrator to plead their case for a Trevecca education professor whose contract was not renewed for next year. Supporters of Dusteen Knotts, an associate professor of education who was told by administrators that her contract is not being renewed next year, have created a petition that they said includes 90 education majors’ signatures. The students spent about 30 minutes with Carol Maxson, associate provost and dean of academic affairs, offering examples of the ways Knotts has impacted their lives while at Trevecca. (more…)

Self-Service to replace IQ Web: students will register for classes at their convenience

By Rachel Swann The way students manage their college life online is getting a big facelift. Starting next month, students will be able to register for classes online, pay their account balances online and stop keeping track of passwords for their different Trevecca accounts. IQ Web, Trevecca’s current web application, is being replaced by a new application called Self-Service. Trevecca has used IQ Web since 2003 for registration and grade viewing. The system is due for an upgrade, and Self-Service is the revamped face of the all of the features of IQ Web. (more…)

Education professor confirms contract will not be renewed

Students start a petition to ask administration to reconsider contract By Morgan Daniels The professor who teaches students how to teach students with disabilities, will not be back in a Trevecca classroom next year. Administrators crackdown on disruptive chapel behavior

By Amy Taylor Mandy Goon is used to students being disruptive while she’s leading worship in chapel; but, when they’re loud during communion, it really irritates her. “It’s not respectful. We’re supposed to be adults. People want to be treated as adults, and they don’t act like it,” Goon said. Trevecca administrators are cracking down on disruptive behavior in chapel after hearing from several students that some students are making worship difficult by talking and laughing during the service.
