Former Trevecca student Fancy finds pop music success

By Griffin Dunn A former Trevecca student has found worldwide success in the music industry this year. Fancy (originally Jake Hagood) is the artist behind the song "Goodbye" and the "Who is Fancy?" campaign. He performed the hit song this month live for the first time on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as his official reveal. Originally from Bentonville, Arkansas, Fancy attended Trevecca from 2008-2010 where he served as sophomore class president from 2009-2010. (more…)

Trevecca songwriter’s organize to form the Trevecca Songwriter’s Association

By Zach Farnum Songwriters who attend Trevecca are organizing themselves to make their mark on the music industry. Around 20 students have joined the Trevecca Songwriter’s Association (TSA), an organization aimed at supporting songwriters. Songwriting has always been one of the most integral parts of the music industry. Over the years, Trevecca has increasingly encouraged these artists on campus to hone their skills by providing more classes geared towards educating on industry standards and best practices, club members said. Reba makes an appearance at Trevecca

By Christy Ulmet “A single mom who works two jobs, who loves her kids and never stops. With gentle hands and the heart of a fighter. I’m a survivor." Those words sound familiar? You might have heard the theme song from the TV show “Reba” if you were anywhere near the Boone Convocation Center Saturday afternoon. More than 200 women from the Nashville Rescue Mission dressed in their Sunday best, loaded a few coach buses, and made their way to the Boone building for a luncheon fundraiser, hosted by the Rescue Mission. They were joined by an additional large group of women who came to the event in support of the nonprofit. (more…)

Trojan Idol remains a hit

By Maci Shingleton Trevecca on Tuesday hosted its annual Trojan Idol competition in the Boone Business Building. Hundreds of students, faculty, alumni, and fans crowded together to watch the first of the two-night vocal performance competition. Ten students were selected last month after auditions and each performed last night in front of their peers and a panel of three tough judges. Five finalists were selected by students and a panel of judges to perform in Thursday night's final competition. Judges have the power to chose two finalists and selected Maureen Maltez who sang “Respect” and Savannah Walters who sang “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet." (more…)

NPWI instructor Benji Cowart talks about his YouTube fame

By Sophie Green A few months ago a great tune with a terrible message got stuck in Benji Cowart's head. What came next was a very unexpected, yet a pleasant surprise. Cowart, a songwriter instructor in the National Praise and Worship Institute at Trevecca Nazarene University, recently wrote a response to Magic's hit song ‘Rude.’ His "dad’s side of the story" has more than 13 million views on YouTube. Trevecca gospel choir performs with Carrie Underwood at CMA Awards

By Maci Shingleton As Carrie Underwood performed tonight on the CMA Awards, the Trevecca Nazarene University gospel choir lent her their voices. Dressed in black and lined up behind the country music star, the students performed live on national television during the CMA Awards. The 48th annual awards show was aired live on ABC from Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville. “My highlight was not only getting to sing behind Carrie Underwood, but being able to sing that particular song. There was not a better song for us to sing,” said sophomore Laurabeth Winchester. (more…)

Country artist Mary Sarah to perform on campus

By Maci Shingleton This afternoon RHA will host the T-Town Hoedown in the Quad beginning at 3p.m. The event will include a mechanical bull, a costume contest, food, and a performance by country artist Mary Sarah beginning at 6p.m. Mary Sarah is a native Texan who is doing big things in the Nashville country music scene. At just 18-years-old, she has released a duet album, “Bridges”, featuring duets with iconic country music stars like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Vince Gill. Following her performance, Mary Sarah will meet exclusively with students who are members of CMA EDU for a Q&A session in McClurkan 200.

Phin: A band with Trevecca roots

By Christy Ulmet Toby Haydel always knew in the back of his mind that he wanted to be in a band. His dream came true in 2013 when he and some of his friends started a band that will perform tonight in the final round of a local battle of the bands. Phin, who will play tonight at one of five bands at The Pavilion East in the Music City Mayhem Showdown at 6 p.m., is made up of six members who draw their inspiration for their music from the same influences, said Haydel, a junior at Trevecca. Phin advances to round three in Music City Mayhem

By Christy Ulmet Phin, a band of Trevecca students and alumni, is one of eight bands left in a Nashville music contest. The band on Friday advanced to round three of Lightning 100’s Sixth Annual Music City Mayhem. “We are so thankful for all of the people who took time to vote and get others to vote for us in this competition,” said Toby Haydel, band member. Music City Mayhem began with 32 bands, all hopeful of winning a spot on Live on the Green, a free outdoor concert series at the end of this summer, as well as studio time and a song played on heavy rotation on Lightning 100. Phin has gone head-to-head with two different bands picked at random and officially found out they would advance to round three late Friday night after beating the band Golden Youth. Trevecca student-led band advances to round two in local music contest

By Christy Ulmet Phin, a band of Trevecca students, alumni, and a sibling of a student, advanced to the second round in Lightning 100’s Sixth Annual Music City Mayhem. Music City Mayhem is an annual contest hosted by Lightning 100 in which over 340 bands auditioned for this year. The contest is set up in a bracket system, like March Madness, and begins with 32 bands. Bands are paired together randomly to run up against one another, and the contest goes on until four bands are left. (more…)
