Who’s who: introducing the new executive student council

As the Trevecca student body, you have recently elected the students who will plan and execute your events; facilitate student campus communication; encourage community, service, and spiritual growth among students; set policy; and advocate to the Trevecca administration on your behalf for the 2010-2011 academic year. The staff of the TrevEchoes wants to give you the chance to know them better. New summer course bikes through Nashville

By Adam Wadding This May summer mini-term an Urban Sociology course will be hitting the streets on wheels. From May 10 to the 26th, students taking the course will be studying urban neighborhoods from the view of a bicycle seat. Students will study urban neighborhoods and collect data about its surroundings. By the end of the term any clean up or rebuilding that students find necessary for neighborhoods will be turned over to the Metro street department in hopes that they can make these changes. (more…)

Nazarene student leaders request change in dancing policy

By Morgan Daniels More than a year has past since Nazarene student leaders asked the administration of the Nazarene Church to establish specific rules and guidelines on the issue of dancing. Student leaders make the case that many types of dances such as swing or ballroom dancing should be deemed suitable, but the Nazarene Manual is unclear on whether or not these dances are allowed. Matt Taylor, the 2008-2009 co-chair of the Nazarene Student Leadership Association (NSLA) Steering Committee, wrote a letter representing the NSLA in February 2009 to the Nazarene General Superintendents requesting a broader interpretation of the Manual statement (34.4) which would allow certain types of dance. New club reels in student interest

By Adam Wadding Grippie Lawson and Blake Walters packed their bags and their bait and drove south to fish for bass as Trevecca’s first participants in a college fishing tournament. Lawson and Walters are among 10 other interested students who are in the processes of forming the first fishing club at Trevecca. (more…)

‘Coffee with a cause’ now brewing on campus

By Morgan Daniels When Scott Hord and his wife went to visit his adopted daughter in Zambia, Africa, he had no idea the experience would lead to opening a coffee shop on a college campus. But after two weeks of living in the orphanage, and leaving his daughter Gracie in Africa during the adoption process, Hord’s heart became convicted. “These children deal with malnutrition, educational needs, and simple medical needs that without medicine, they can die from,” Hord said. “I saw enough of those situations that I finally realized that the process was going to go beyond adoption—it had to be more.” (more…)

Remembering the life of Kyle Funke

By Morgan Daniels To Kyle Funke, Trevecca was more than a university. It was also his home—a place of belonging, brotherhood and an environment where his personality and faith truly shined, said friends and family. “He was a man of integrity. He understood his spiritual foundation and he was very faithful to it—I think Trevecca really helped that,” Pete Funke, Kyle’s father said. Kyle, 21, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2010 after a 7-year battle with a brain tumor and cancer. He endured three surgeries and exhausted every form of treatment, but Kyle’s determination and optimism was always evident, said those who knew him best. (more…)

Trevecca Women team up for fitness challenge

By Shadaye Hunnicutt Kaylee Harrell and Rebekah Dunn sit on the couches in the Tennessee Hall lobby debating whether or not a package of fruit snacksis considered a dessert. The sophomores have just finished working out and are trying not to be tempted by the candy bars for sale in the lobby. For the past week the women of Tennessee and Georgia Halls have been trying to cut calories, exercise and explore the ways fitness are connected to a healthy spiritual life. (more…)
