Voter Registration deadline is Feb 1

by Olivia Kelley The deadline to register to vote in the primary election is fast approaching. Trevecca students who want to vote in the 2016 presidential election should register this week if they haven't already. Feb. 1 is the deadline to get registered to vote in the primary election, which takes place on March 1 this year. The election has usually been held in May, so it is important that voters who want to participate get registered this week rather than putting it off. Allison Clark, coordinator of voter registration and education for Trevecca, hopes to see as many students as possible get registered this week. Benson Brotherhood competition sparks school spirit among Trevecca guys

  by Kip Kenerly Pictures of guys painted purple and white or hanging out in hammocks in odd places and showing their best school spirit are all over social media thanks to a new competition in Benson Hall. The coveted Benson Cup will be awarded at the end of the semester to the floor who has the most points from attending Trevecca's social and athletic events and posting on social media using the hashtag #bensonbrotherhood. With summer approaching, some couples face maintaining long distance relationships

by Olivia Kelley Freshmen Ingrid Rekedal and Noah Daniels are getting ready to   figure out how to make their relationship work while being 1,900 miles apart. The Trevecca couple has been dating for nine months after meeting on campus and have rarely gone a day without seeing each other. But this summer, while Rekedal remains in Nashville to pursue an internship, Daniels will be headed across the country to Idaho. Many Trevecca couples are facing similar situations as the end of the semester approaches. According to a survey conducted by hercampus.com, 87 percent of college students have been in a long-distance relationship at some point. Alumn practices his faith at Trevecca Urban Farm

by Montgomery Sparrow Carlson Grae is finding the Trevecca Urban Farm to be a great place to practice his faith while he’s earning his master’s degree in religion. Grae, the part-time farm hand, joined the staff last fall. He provides assistance to Jason Adkins, Trevecca’s Environmental Projects Coordinator, with general activity on Trevecca’s Urban Farm and also is a creative force to create programs to enlist more volunteers. “I don’t know how I would run the farm without him. He is a creative thinker, a heavy lifter, and a hard worker.” Adkins said. “To be a farmer, you have to be a total person, and Carlson is one of those total people that you hope to come along.” (more…)

Tuition equality bill fails: Trevecca advocates disappointed

By Manon Lane Today was an emotional day for advocates of tuition equality in Tennessee, as the House voted 49-47 against a bill that would have allowed immigrant students without legal status to pay in-state tuition rates at public universities. The bill needed 50 votes to pass. Members of Trevecca’s student body and staff have participated in advocating for the passage of the bill. (more…)

Behind the scenes of the 72-Hour Film Festival

By Griffin Dunn Students made many late night efforts this weekend preparing for Trevecca SGA's 72-Hour Film Festival at Trevecca. The teams of students were assigned a genre last Friday at 9 p.m. and have until Monday at 9 p.m. to complete a short film, which fulfills not only their genre but also other set tasks for bonus points. Immigrant students without legal status struggle to pay for college

By Manon Lane Jazmin Ramirez always wanted to go to college, but it wasn't until she was a junior in high school that she realized it might not be possible. “I always knew I was undocumented, but I never actually understood what that meant until my junior year of high school when I started applying, or looking into colleges,” said Ramirez, a freshman social justice major, as she stood in front of her peers and gave a student’s perspective at the G92 Immigration Forum hosted last month by the J.V. PBS documentary showcases hidden part of Nashville

By Bailey Basham A PBS documentary aired last week on sex trafficking which included a lengthy report on trafficking in Trevecca’s neighborhood. As part of a three-part PBS documentary series, New York Times op-ed columnist Nicholas Kristof explored the issue of sex trafficking in the U.S. which brought him to Murfreesboro Road. (more…)
