Changes to art program will include a new instructor

By Nadia Smith Trevecca is looking for an adjunct instructor to continue its art program. The Department of Communication Studies made changes to the number of art classes offered each semester. Communication faculty and programs to change next year

By Montgomery Sparrow Two faculty members in the Department of Communication Studies will not be returning next year, though no programs will be cut. Mark Bishop, associate professor of communication, notified the university in January that he is returning to Olivet Nazarene University where he taught for 12 years before coming to Trevecca. Bishop said he is going back to Olivet to be near family. “I have been invited back, “ he said. “After being here, it was clear that we need to be near our family.” Jamey Durham, associate professor of communication, also confirmed he is not returning to Trevecca next year. “I was given no reason on why I’m not returning,” he said. “They let me go and said they were under no legal obligation to tell me why. Dean Diehl Leaving Trevecca To Go Back To Provident Music Group 

by Stephen Rudge The director of Trevecca’s music business program is headed back to the label where he worked for 20 years before going full time in the class room. Dean Diehl will become Senior Vice President of Provident Music Group, effective at the end of the semester. Provident is a division of Sony Music Entertainment focusing primarily on Christian music. Trevecca President Dan Boone’s written response to the Soulforce visit

This past Monday we hosted a visit from an activist group called SoulForce. Quoting from their letter, “Groups of young adults have brought the Equality Ride bus to more than 70 campuses over the last four years with the heartfelt mission of creating dialogue about the inclusion and community climate of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) people.” The group was respectful, congenial, and informed. They came in a spirit of friendship and left in the same spirit. We were able to converse with each other in a manner befitting respect and charity. They spoke on behalf of a hurting minority in the church and on the campus whose gender orientation makes life challenging for them. They left us with 3 requests: (more…)

Trevecca seeks new athletic director

By Morgan Daniels and Tyler D. Whetstone Trevecca will have a new athletics director next year. Brenda Patterson, director of intercollegiate athletics at Trevecca, will finish her duties and contract through the end of June. Trevecca is currently in the process of applying to be a NCAA Division II school. University officials said they are seeking a different direction for Trevecca athletics, said Dan Boone, university president. “We felt for the overall good of the athletic department, that it was in the best interest to make a change,” Dan Boone, university president, said. Student petition now in hands of Trevecca administration

Students meet with an administrator in regards to the non-renewal of an education professor's contract By Morgan Daniels Six students met on Wednesday with an administrator to plead their case for a Trevecca education professor whose contract was not renewed for next year. Supporters of Dusteen Knotts, an associate professor of education who was told by administrators that her contract is not being renewed next year, have created a petition that they said includes 90 education majors’ signatures. The students spent about 30 minutes with Carol Maxson, associate provost and dean of academic affairs, offering examples of the ways Knotts has impacted their lives while at Trevecca. (more…)

Education professor confirms contract will not be renewed

Students start a petition to ask administration to reconsider contract By Morgan Daniels The professor who teaches students how to teach students with disabilities, will not be back in a Trevecca classroom next year. Blog blasts Trevecca, Boone

By Morgan Daniels A group of Nazarenes who say they are worried the Nazarene universities are part of the reason the Nazarene church has been led astray, have launched a website to publicly question the universities’ teachings and leadership. The group, called the Concerned Nazarenes, has written around 85 posts during the past year opposing and criticizing many teachings in the Nazarene Church, and more specifically, teachings at Trevecca Nazarene University. For more than a year, this group has attacked Trevecca Nazarene University, criticizing practices such as the use of the word “labyrinth” when describing a prayer room, and Trevecca’s Spiritual Formation Retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani, a Catholic monastery.
