Trevecca Students Raise Awareness of Veteran Suicides

By Blake Stewart and Bailey Basham Wesley Cooper was scrolling through Facebook when he came across a post detailing a challenge called #22pushups. Cooper, sophomore religion major and Vanderbilt Reserve Officer Training Corps member, said this post brought to his attention a sad statistic. “Every day, an average of 22 soldiers [commit suicide], and their deaths go unnoticed. The object of this challenge is to do 22 pushups for 22 days to bring awareness to this statistic and symbolically take on the pain that their family and loved ones are going through,” said Cooper. Norm Robinson to retire in December after 25 years at Trevecca

By Bailey Basham Over the course of his career, Norm Robinson was a marine, a police officer for Metro Nashville and the Trevecca director of security. In January, students at Trevecca will begin a new semester without him patrolling campus for the first time in 25 years. Robinson will be retiring in December of this year after being at Trevecca since 1991 when he came to Trevecca as a 40-year-old freshman. (more…)

Sister, Sister: Siblings to play for Lady Trojans basketball

By Andrew Preston For only the second time in the programs 23-year history, the Lady Trojans will have sisters on the same team. Those two sisters, Megan and McKenzie Kilburn, originally from Summertown, Tenn., grew up playing basketball together their entire lives. From one-on-one games in their backyard to the occasional games on the school playground, when it comes to basketball, the Kilburns know each other very well. “We can read each other very well because we always have to guard each other. Really we know a lot of the little things [about each other],” said freshman McKenzie. “We know what the other is going to do, so we always have to change it up.” (more…)

Drury bests Lady Trojans in final “Pops Duncan Classic” game

By Andrew Preston The Lady Trojans (1-1) fell 94-59 against the Drury University Lady Panthers (2-0) Saturday afternoon in the Trojan Fieldhouse. Today’s match-up concluded this season’s action of the “Pops Duncan Classic,” a tournament hosted by Trevecca for the past eleven years. The Lady Trojans offense got off to another slow start in this one, scoring only nine first quarter points. The Lady Trojans defense struggled in the second period, conceding 28 points as the Lady Trojans trailed at the half, 25-43. At halftime, the Lady Trojans were led by senior Sarah Raby who had 8 points and 2 rebounds. The Lady Panthers were shooting better than 60 percent from the field at the half, getting 15 points from Heather Harman. (more…)

Lady Trojans fall in regular season opener, 42-31

By Andrew Preston The Lady Trojans (0-1) began their regular season Friday night with a 42-31 loss against the University of Missouri-St Louis Lady Tritons (1-0) in the Trojan Fieldhouse. Tonight’s match-up was the second of the evening as Kentucky Wesleyan and Drury University competed earlier as part of this weekend’s 11th annual “Pops Duncan Classic” tournament. Jack “Pops” Duncan is a longtime Trevecca athletics fan, and can be seen supporting the Trojans at most all home games. Duncan lives in the Trevecca Towers and has been named an “honorary coach” of the Lady Trojans basketball, volleyball and softball teams for his continued support of the teams. Campus officials denounce hateful social media posts in wake of election

by Bailey Basham Trevecca officials responded quickly on Wednesday to a couple of social media posts by Trevecca students aimed at immigrant and minority students. "The recent Facebook post does not reflect the culture of Trevecca. In fact, a concerted effort of inclusion and acceptance is practiced on this campus daily in a Christ-like manner. The name Trevecca means a binding together in love. We will continue to live in that manner through these times of national division,” said Steve Harris, associate provost and dean of students. Freshman Brings Back Cheerleading for 2016-2017 School Year

By Brooklyn Dance For the first time in 47 years, Trevecca does not have a cheerleading team, but a freshman is working to have a club of cheerleaders ready for at least a few basketball games. Athletic Director Mark Elliot and Mary Lou Del Rio, Trevecca’s former cheerleading sponsor, made the decision over the summer to take a year off. “Let’s back up, revaluate, and see how this year goes,” said Elliott. “Let’s figure out a different way to do it.” (more…)

Trojans dominate Homecoming, beat Midway 81-52

By Andrew Preston The Trojans (1-0) defeated Midway University (0-4) 81-52 late Saturday afternoon in an exhibition match-up at the Trojan Fieldhouse. The Trojans got off to a hot start scoring the game’s first 13 points. The game began with junior guard, Jarvis Jones sinking back to back three pointers for the home team. After that the Trojans took a 10-0 lead before causing first year coach of the Midway Eagles, Joe Krupinski, to call timeout. The Eagles were unable to get the ball past the Trojans stifling defense until Bryson Harris hit a three pointer to get his team on the scoreboard around the 16:00 mark. (more…)

Lady Trojans hang on, avoid late scare on Homecoming

By Andrew Preston The Lady Trojans (1-0) began their season Saturday with an exhibition match-up against Midway University (1-2) at the Trojan Fieldhouse. The basketball games this afternoon were among many other of the festivities on the Hill for this Homecoming weekend. Much of the first ten minutes belonged to the visitors as the only Lady Trojan to score in the first seven minutes of action was sophomore Briana Bryant. Bryant had 8 points on 3-7 shooting in the first half to lead the purple and white to a 24-15 halftime lead. During the second quarter the Lady Trojans picked up their pace and their scoring prowess. Music Building to Open for Classes in Spring

By Sydney Wisman Students enrolled in music programs at Trevecca can expect to begin classes in the building in January. The $7.9 million 25,509-square-foot building will be home to three classrooms, five studios for private instruction, seven practice rooms, additional spaces for instrumental and choral instruction and a 2,810-square-foot black box theatre. Trevecca closed the $1.4 million deal on the land that previously belonged to Volunteer Trucking Company in December of last year. Renovations on existing buildings on the property began in January 2016. Those buildings are to house the Center for Music and Worship Arts—an idea over 20 years in the making. (more…)
