Lady Trojans hang on, avoid late scare on Homecoming

The Lady Trojans (1-0) began their season Saturday with an exhibition match-up against Midway University (1-2) at the Trojan Fieldhouse.

The basketball games this afternoon were among many other of the festivities on the Hill for this Homecoming weekend.

Much of the first ten minutes belonged to the visitors as the only Lady Trojan to score in the first seven minutes of action was sophomore Briana Bryant.

Bryant had 8 points on 3-7 shooting in the first half to lead the purple and white to a 24-15 halftime lead.

During the second quarter the Lady Trojans picked up their pace and their scoring prowess. With an 8-0 run to b56egin the second period, they extended their first quarter lead of 13-11 to 19-11, not allowing the Lady Eagles to score until the 4:32 mark in the second half.

A scary moment for the Lady Trojans late in the second quarter when a McKenzie Kilburn missed free throw caused Briana McDonald to attempt for a rebound, but instead crashed down hard to the floor hitting her head. Play was stopped, as McDonald bleeding. She was escorted off by team trainers.

“She has a possible concussion and will need stiches,” said head coach, Chad Hibdon after the game.

During the third period of action the Lady Trojans maintained their first half advantage over the Lady Eagles taking a 35-26 lead going into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter provided the bulk of the excitement for the 934 in attendance.

Another scary moment for the Lady Trojans happened late in the fourth as Briana Bryant went down and needed assistance off the court.

“I’m not sure what’s wrong with her, it doesn’t look good at this time,” said Hibdon.

The Lady Trojans saw their nine-point lead fade to seven and eventually decline to as little as two. With 6:10 left in the fourth quarter the Lady Eagles put on the full court press.

“It’s one (full court press) of the 67many elements we need to work on in practice,” said Hibdon.

It was a three-point shot hit by sophomore Adi Hale with 46 seconds left that seemingly sealed the victory for the Lady Trojans. Hale’s three gave the Lady Trojans a 43-38 lead and the momentum.

The Lady Trojans beat the Lady Eagles 46-41 behind 12 points from senior, Megan Kilburn, as well as 10 points each from Briana Bryant and Sarah Raby.

The Lady Trojans are back in action next Friday night, Nov 11, against the University of Missouri- St. Louis at the Trojan Fieldhouse.
