Trevecca will have a new athletics director next year.
Brenda Patterson, director of intercollegiate athletics at Trevecca, will finish her duties and contract through the end of June.
Trevecca is currently in the process of applying to be a NCAA Division II school. University officials said they are seeking a different direction for Trevecca athletics, said Dan Boone, university president.
“We felt for the overall good of the athletic department, that it was in the best interest to make a change,” Dan Boone, university president, said.
Patterson did not immediately return phone calls and emails by TrevEchoes reporters.
Steve Harris, associate provost and dean of student development, said administration would love to see Patterson stay.
“She’s got expertise in an area that Trevecca would actually benefit by,” Harris said.
For the future of Trevecca athletics’, Harris said he hopes to have the position of athletic director for the 2011-2012 academic year posted by next week.
“We would love to hire someone with NCAA DII experience,” but “the biggest thing for us is hiring someone that fits the mission and purpose of the university,” Harris said.
Patterson will continue her role as Athletic Director, residing over the DII application until the end of the fiscal year. Boone said the transition of the athletic director position should have no negative effect on the DII process.
“I can’t state strongly enough of our high regard, for the personal integrity, the spiritual-depth and work commitment of Brenda. Anything people want to summarize out of this, that thinks there are issues there—they’re just dead wrong,” Boone said.
